DEXA Scan Cost: US Body-Composition Prices for Lifters

A fitness-focused price guide with provider examples, package arithmetic and the questions to ask before paying for a baseline or follow-up.

Quick answer: A fitness DEXA scan has no single nationwide price. Public offers checked October 27, 2026 ranged from BodySpec’s advertised starting price of $45 to a $199 single scan at DexaFit Cincinnati. Compare the exact location, included report and consultation, plus package terms. The lowest advertised per-scan price may require a larger commitment.

One search shows a $45 starting price. Another provider wants $199, and a package promises a better deal if you buy several appointments. DEXA scan cost becomes much clearer when you compare the same service and calculate what you will actually use.

This guide covers US fitness body-composition scans, with public prices checked October 27, 2026. It does not estimate medical bone-density billing or insurance reimbursement. The examples below are a dated shopping comparison, not a national average or a promise that the lowest offer is available near you.

How much does a body-composition DEXA scan cost?

The published single-scan examples we checked span an advertised starting price of $45 to a location-specific $199. Those endpoints represent different providers and purchase conditions. A local appointment quote is more useful than assuming every DEXA service should fall at one point within that range.

Provider and geographySingle-scan price checkedWhat the listing describesWhat to confirm
BodySpec, US networkFrom $45 advertisedBody-composition DEXA; provider guide also advertises membership pricing from $40 per scanYour location's actual appointment price and membership terms
DexaFit Las Vegas, Nevada$139Single DEXA body-composition scanAvailable times and any consultation or package terms
DexaFit Cincinnati, Ohio$199Body-composition scan; physician-guided review is separately pricedWhether you want the optional review or a different service bundle

BodySpec's figure comes from its own published price guide, rather than a completed local booking quote. Its booking page lists cities including Los Angeles, Austin, Dallas and Seattle. Check the date and location you plan to attend before treating that advertised floor as your budget.

The two DexaFit examples show why the chain name alone is insufficient. Pricing and service combinations vary by location. A quote from Las Vegas should not be used as the assumed price for Cincinnati.

What should be included in your price comparison?

Ask for a whole-body composition scan and a copy of its results. Make sure that is what the quoted service covers. A different test on the same provider's menu may answer a different question.

For a lifting or fat-loss baseline, the useful deliverable is a report you can keep and compare later. Ask whether it includes total and regional fat mass, lean mass and the date of testing. Ask how you will receive the results and whether someone explains the fields.

A useful booking checklist is short:

  • What is the full price for this location and date?
  • Does it include a downloadable or printed composition report?
  • Is a results explanation included, optional or separately billed?
  • Can you compare a later appointment on the same equipment and software?
  • Are there cancellation, rescheduling or no-show fees?
  • What preparation and eligibility instructions does this provider require?

Obtain those answers before comparing add-ons. Resting metabolic rate and VO2 max testing are separate services; including them in a package changes both the price and what you receive.

Do DEXA packages actually save money?

They can, if you complete the appointments under the package terms. Divide the total amount paid by the number of scans you will use. Do not use the maximum included count when you already know you cannot attend that often.

These are examples from the same provider pages, checked October 27. The arithmetic is ours. The appointment counts are budget scenarios, not recommendations for scan frequency.

Published offerUpfront amountIf you use every included scanIf you use fewer
Cincinnati two-scan pack$358$179 per scanOne completed scan costs you $358
Cincinnati four-scan pack$677$169.25 per scanTwo completed scans cost $338.50 each
Las Vegas Annual Deluxe, four DEXAs$399 per year$99.75 per DEXA, before assigning value to extrasTwo completed scans cost $199.50 each

The Las Vegas annual plan also lists Styku and red-light sessions. If you do not want those extras, assign them no value in your own comparison. That keeps a bundle from appearing cheaper just because its advertised savings include services you would never otherwise purchase.

Check expiration, transfer, refund and renewal conditions directly with the provider. A lower unit price can still produce a higher total bill. Two Las Vegas single scans at the listed $139 would total $278, below the $399 annual commitment for someone who only uses two.

What would a year of check-ins cost?

Build the budget from your actual plan. For illustration, two Cincinnati single appointments total $398, while its listed two-pack totals $358. The arithmetic saving is $40 if both appointments are completed and the package conditions work for you.

Then add costs outside the appointment price: travel, parking, time away from work and any optional review. Keep those separate so you can see whether a cheaper but distant provider still makes sense.

A simple worksheet is:

Planned total = appointment or package payment + travel costs + chosen add-ons.

Effective scan cost = planned total ÷ completed scans.

Use completed scans when reviewing what you actually spent. If you buy a four-pack and attend twice, your effective cost should reflect two visits. This avoids reporting a theoretical saving that never happened.

Is a DEXA scan worth paying for if you lift?

It may be useful when you want a structured composition baseline and will keep the report for comparison. Its value is easier to judge when you have a clear question, such as how your regional lean and fat estimates changed across a training phase.

The report still needs interpretation. Lean mass is broader than skeletal muscle, and a small difference between appointments does not automatically show new muscle tissue. Follow the provider's preparation instructions and ask what changes it considers meaningfully larger than measurement variation.

Our BodySpec review focuses on that provider's experience and report. Our DEXA alternatives guide compares ways to track progress when appointments are inconvenient or outside your budget.

How can you track progress between appointments?

Keep the lower-cost records that show what happened between scans: repeatable photos, waist measurements, your weight trend and a training log. These records answer different questions and provide context for the next report.

Try the free progress-photo comparison tool with matched poses and lighting. A photograph can help you review appearance changes, but it cannot measure visceral fat, bone mineral content or laboratory-grade body composition. It should not be used to declare that a DEXA value is right or wrong.

First, identify the exact service and local price. Second, choose the smallest commitment that fits the appointments you expect to complete. Third, keep the report and a consistent progress record so the purchase informs your next decision.

What else should you know?

What is the average cost of a DEXA body-composition scan?

This guide does not calculate a national average. The public offers checked included BodySpec starting at $45, DexaFit Las Vegas at $139 and DexaFit Cincinnati at $199 for a single appointment. Those are different providers and conditions. Request a location-specific quote before using any of them as your own budget.

Is a DEXA membership cheaper than paying per scan?

It depends on how many included appointments you complete and the plan terms. Divide the total payment by your expected completed scans, then compare it with buying those visits separately. Include travel and chosen add-ons. A low advertised unit price can be expensive if some appointments expire unused.

Does the scan price include a consultation?

Check the specific listing and ask the provider. A report, a brief explanation and a longer professional review may be separate services. Cincinnati explicitly lists physician-guided review as an optional add-on. Compare the service you actually want, and confirm the full amount before booking rather than assuming every quote includes the same support.

How often should I pay for a DEXA scan?

Choose the timing around the question you want to answer and discuss a suitable interval with the provider. The two- and four-appointment examples here are cost calculations, not a recommended schedule. Avoid buying extra scans solely to reach a package discount, and keep consistent lower-cost progress records between appointments.

Can progress photos replace a DEXA report?

Photos can document visible changes at little cost, especially when pose and lighting stay consistent. They cannot provide the same measurements as a DEXA report or establish the accuracy of its results. Use them with your weight, waist and training records to provide context between appointments and decide what you want to learn next.
