Quick answer: MacroFactor Workouts combines workout logging, program building and rule-based Smart Progression. It also includes progress photos and body metrics, so you may already have a place for visual check-ins. Treat it as a separate training product from MacroFactor Nutrition. Test your own routine and history requirements before committing to a switch.
A familiar nutrition brand does not automatically make a training app the right home for your lifting history. The useful questions are specific: can you build your routine, adjust a difficult set and understand what comes next?
Research basis: This review evaluates published MacroFactor documentation checked September 23, 2026. We have not run a longitudinal hands-on training test. It is written by Michael Rode, founder of GainFrame, and the cover is illustrative. Product capabilities are sourced below; the trial checklist is our evaluation framework.
What is MacroFactor Workouts?
MacroFactor Workouts is a strength-training app with logging, program creation and Smart Progression. The publisher describes progression as rule-based rather than generative AI. You can build a routine or use its program-building workflow, then record your sessions. MacroFactor Workouts overview
Its feature list includes gym equipment profiles, repetitions in reserve, drop sets and partial repetitions. These are useful controls to inspect with your own training. A long list of supported set types does not tell you how comfortable the logging flow will feel between sets.
What should you test in Smart Progression?
Start with an exercise you know well. Enter the available loads correctly and log a normal session. Inspect the following prescription: can you see what changed, and can you adjust it when necessary?
Smart Progression needs logged training before it starts making recommendations. Its help center also explains controls for starting a log from suggested or previous values, and for handling weight increments that do not fit the target rep range. Smart Progression settings
Your test should include an imperfect day. You might miss the last repetition or change equipment because a station is occupied. Record those events honestly and check whether the next session remains understandable. An app trial can reveal the workflow; it cannot establish a long-term training advantage after a few workouts.
| Task | What to check |
|---|---|
| Build your routine | Exercise selection, order and required set types |
| Log a busy session | Editing sets and replacing an exercise |
| Repeat the workout | Whether the next targets are clear |
| Train at another gym | Available equipment and load increments |
| Review the week | Finding completed sessions and notes |
| Leave later | Available exports and retained records |
Does MacroFactor Workouts include progress photos?
Yes. The publisher includes progress photos and body metrics among the app's features. Its help center also documents adding a Photos shortcut through the central plus menu, alongside other shortcuts. You do not need to assume a separate photo app is required just because this is primarily a workout logger. Managing Workouts shortcuts
Try adding a real check-in and finding it again. Check how the workflow handles your preferred dates and views. For a useful comparison, preserve the original date and repeat the camera height, pose and lighting. A more organized library cannot correct inconsistent photo conditions.
If you only need an occasional export, the free photo timelapse maker can arrange existing photos into a GIF or contact sheet locally. GainFrame for iPhone is another option if a dedicated visual history fits your routine. Start with the features you already have.
How does Workouts connect to MacroFactor Nutrition?
The publisher describes Workouts and Nutrition as separate apps that can share selected information, including body metrics, photos and certain habits. That does not mean a workout automatically rewrites your nutrition coaching. The Workouts FAQ distinguishes shared information from direct integration of those coaching decisions. MacroFactor's integration FAQ
Before subscribing, identify which app you need and which offer you are choosing. Keeping nutrition and training in one brand's ecosystem can be convenient, but your decision should depend on the workflows and purchase terms available to you.
What does MacroFactor Workouts cost?
The Workouts page lists $11.99 monthly, $47.99 for six months or $71.99 annually, with a seven-day trial, in US dollars when checked September 23, 2026. Confirm the current store offer and renewal date on your device. A displayed monthly equivalent for an annual plan is not a monthly payment schedule. Current published pricing
The current help center also lists an $89.99 annual bundle for both apps. Eligible Nutrition subscribers active before January 1, 2026 can retain promotional Workouts access through January 12, 2027 while maintaining their subscription. Check eligibility before buying a separate plan. Bundle and legacy access details
Write down one outcome that would justify paying: fewer logging interruptions, clearer session planning or an easier repeat workout. Evaluate that outcome before the trial ends.
Can you move your existing workout history?
The published FAQ says past workout history from another app cannot currently be imported. That is a material limitation if years of logs are central to your workflow. Program import and historical-session import are different jobs, so verify the exact one you need. MacroFactor import FAQ
Keep an accessible copy of your existing records. Trial a current routine before committing new history to a different system. If the main problem is photo organization, solve that smaller problem first; it may not require moving your training log at all.
What else should you know?
Is MacroFactor Workouts the same app as MacroFactor Nutrition?
They are separate products with different day-to-day jobs. Workouts handles training, while Nutrition handles food tracking and nutrition coaching. The publisher documents selected shared information, but you should check which subscription offer you are buying and the specific integration you need before relying on it.
Does MacroFactor Workouts use generative AI?
The publisher describes Smart Progression as rule-based. Evaluate it by entering your real equipment, logging normal sessions and checking the next prescription. A label alone does not establish better training results, and this review has not independently measured the outcomes of following its recommendations over time.
Can you keep progress photos in MacroFactor Workouts?
Yes, progress photos are included in the published feature set, and the help center documents a Photos shortcut. Test whether adding and retrieving your check-ins feels convenient. Keep their original dates and use consistent photo conditions so the resulting history remains useful when you compare it later.
Who should trial MacroFactor Workouts?
It is worth a trial if you want to evaluate structured logging and progression with your own routine. Check the specific set types, equipment settings and history requirements you depend on. If your current log already works well, identify a concrete improvement before moving your training records.
